A FileMaker solution may continue to operate when its original developer is unavailable, but ongoing support can become difficult without the correct access, documentation, and technical knowledge. Preparing for a transition before an urgent issue occurs gives the incoming developer time to understand the system and verify that critical resources are available.
Protecting continuity
Your FileMaker solution may continue running normally, but problems arise when no one can address failures, make required changes, renew integrations, or explain how critical processes work. The risk is greater when one developer is the only person with full-access credentials, server knowledge, or documentation. Your organization should have access to the FileMaker files, Full Access credentials, FileMaker Server administration, hosting information, licensing records, plug-in details, and integration accounts. Documentation should identify important schedules, external services, deployment procedures, and any separate development environment.
Planning the transition
An orderly handoff allows the outgoing developer to explain the architecture, known issues, custom functions, integrations, and current priorities. It also gives the incoming team time to verify access and review the system before an urgent problem occurs.
The best time to prepare is while the existing developer can still answer questions and provide credentials. If a transition is already urgent, gather every available file, backup, invoice, email, password record, and technical document so we can begin assessing the system.
Ongoing support
We have experience taking over FileMaker systems from solo developers and other development firms. Our process includes reviewing available documentation, meeting with the outgoing developer when possible, confirming access, learning the solution, and establishing a support plan for your organization.
