When FileMaker performs normally in the office but feels slow from home or another location, the remote connection is usually a major factor. FileMaker communicates frequently with the server, so delay and connection quality can matter as much as advertised internet speed.

Internet speed is only part of the issue

A fast download speed does not guarantee a fast FileMaker connection. Upload speed, latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, and the route between your location and the server can all affect performance.

VPNs add additional processing

A VPN encrypts and routes traffic through another network. Depending on the VPN configuration and distance, this may add, delay, or reduce available bandwidth.

Some FileMaker screens use more data

Layouts with many related records, unstored calculations, large images, dashboards, or complex scripts may require more communication with the server and can feel significantly slower over a remote connection.

Check the local network

Test from a stable Wi-Fi connection or, when possible, a wired connection. Avoid weak signals, public Wi-Fi, cellular hotspots with limited service, or other household activity that is heavily using the connection.

Report patterns

Let us know whether every part of the solution is slow or only certain layouts, reports, or scripts. Also tell us whether the slowdown occurs at a particular time of day.

Remote performance may be improved through network changes, layout or script optimization, server relocation, or a different access method. We can review the specific cause before recommending changes.
